Cambridge Centre for the Arts - Summer Camps 2022

Registration opens Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at 8:00 a.m.

Activities are developed and led by artists, performers, arts educators and camp providers who have extensive experience running children’s programs and camps. They are assisted by summer students with arts backgrounds, children’s programming experience and High 5 training. Includes breaks with games and other activities, as well as time outdoors in the civic square area. See below for full listing of camps.

Days and Times

Camps are Monday to Friday except the week of August 2-5 which is Tuesday to Friday. The main activities run 9am-4pm (with lunch and other breaks). Children can be dropped off 8-9am and picked up 4-5pm. Summer student staff supervise these before/after care times with opportunities for informal games and activities.

COVID Protocols

All required provincial, regional and City of Cambridge procedures will be followed. 

Registration

On-line registration is available at www.cambridge.ca/coral. You can also register in person at any City of Cambridge recreation centre, including the Centre for the Arts, and City Hall. Before coming, please contact the facility to make sure it is open and to confirm current operating hours.

Drop Off, Pick Up and Parking

Children should be dropped off and picked up at the summer camp entrance on Wellington Street that is next to the large door with the colourful mural just down from the intersection of Dickson and Wellington Street. Parking is available in the lot that is across from the intersection. Please park in the 2 hour parking spots (not the David Durward Centre permit area).

 July 4-8 

Stop Motion Animation: Lego (Ages 6-9) 

You can create a stop motion animated film and bring Lego characters to life! Learn how to storyboard, make props and sets, develop a script, shoot and edit your film - complete with voices, sound effects and titles. Includes using a MacBook and HD stop-motion camera. If possible, we will invite family and friends for a special film screening. Films will also be viewable through an on-line link. Camp led by a trained filmmaker from ‘Film Camp in a Box’ with a summer student assistant.

Musical Theatre: Aladdin, Annie and Beauty & The Beast (Ages 6-9)

A lively week of music, dance and drama! Develop performance skills in a supportive and engaging environment while bringing to life some of the characters and songs from these beloved stories. Camp leader Rachel Cleland is a trained singer and performer who loves exploring musical theatre with children. Assisted by an enthusiastic summer student. Final performance (filmed if necessary).

Young Artists: Paint, Draw, Print! (Ages 8-12)

Create vibrant landscapes, expressive animals, dynamic people and more during this wonderful week of art! Make your projects extra special by learning unique colour, line, texture and composition techniques. Paint on paper and canvas, draw using pencil, pastels and ink and explore the magic of printmaking. With artist Kari Mullin, who has years of experience running engaging children’s camps, and a summer student assistant.

 JULY 11-15

Mr. McGregor’s Fantasy Garden (Ages 6-9) 

Join us in the magical place where Peter Rabbit and his family and friends live! Find out about lady bugs, dragonflies, birds and bees. Make mosaic butterfly stepping stones, wire and rock critters, garden gnomes, yarn flowers and a bug hotel. Create your own miniature fantasy garden with characters, buildings, animals and more. How about putting fairies, elves and woodland creatures in your garden? Or a world of monsters or dinosaurs! Camp led by Jeanette Berenz and Nicki Mandel of River’s Edge Gardeners and a summer student assistant.

Digital Design: Draw, Paint & Animate (Ages 6-9) 

Your children will love this digital design adventure! Tux Paint teaches computer literacy through drawing, complete with sound effects to enhance the experience. Discover how to use Maker's Empire, a fun and easy app to create and share 3D designs. Explore Kid Pix 3D with animation, backdrops and 3D characters to make a fun short story. Design amazing visual presentations using Google Slides fonts, themes, videos and more. Children will also learn how to design, share and play with their own fun Kahoots quizzes. Outdoor breaks. Led by an instructor from Stemotics with a summer student assistant.

Drawing: Superhero, Cartoon and Anime Characters (Ages 8-12) 

Learn how to draw faces, heads, hands and bodies in these three popular styles. Explore basic anatomy and pose your favourite character to create dynamic motion and action like the comic book professionals. Draw faces from all angles and discover techniques that convey expressions and emotion. Your characters will come to life! Includes breaks for physical games and activities, as well as time outdoors. Learn how to make your own video games in the Arcade style (Breakout, Pacman, Asteroids, Space Invaders) and Platform style (Super Mario, Fire Boy & Water Girl, Terraria). Design worlds and characters, and then bring them to life by programming movement, jumping, collecting coins and other gaming actions. Includes breaks for physical games and activity, as well as time outdoors. Bring a USB stick to take your creations home to play. Digital Design: Graphics, Websites and 3D Printing (Ages 8-12)

Explore new technology to use your logic, knowledge, and creativity in the exciting world of digital design. The Canva program teaches children to create fun, dynamic posters, logos, and flyers. Discover how you can design and 3D print whatever your imagination can come up with. Using Weebly or Wix, make your own unique website pages. Create dynamic stories and presentations combining art, animation and video with Power Point and Office Sway. Outdoor breaks. Led by an instructor from Stemotics with a summer student assistant.

JULY 25-29

Young Artists: Wonderful Wire & Perfect Paper! (Ages 8-12) - FULL

You would be amazed at what you can do with wire and paper! Create beautiful embellished wire bracelets, necklaces and other jewelry pieces. Make small and large whimsical wire sculptures of animals, people and more to display in the garden or home. Learn the ancient art of making handmade paper from fabric, recycled scraps and natural materials. Then make books from your paper with decorated covers using special book binding techniques. With artist Kari Mullin who has been leading creative art programs for children for many years, and a summer student assistant.

Coding, Animation and Game Design (Ages 6-9)  - FULL

A dynamic week of creating interactive stories, animated adventures, and games. Learn kid-friendly Scratch Programming, discover a special app for stop-motion animation, explore Tinker CAD to make and print 3D designs and write code to create and customize a fantastic Minecraft gaming world. Children will even learn how to program a robot to draw their own unique design with Root iRobot! Led by an instructor from Stemotics and a summer student assistant.

Dance Theatre: Disney Delights (Ages 6-9) - FULL

Experience the Disney Magic! Come and have great fun exploring the characters and stories from films such as Inside Out, Coco, Frozen, Lion King, Peter Pan, Moana and Mulan through dance, drama, arts & crafts, and games. Final performance for family and friends - if necessary filmed to enjoy at home. Includes outdoor breaks. Led by Kim Green, a trained dancer and arts educator who loves creating with children, with a summer student assistant.

Young Artists: Ancient Art, Angry Birds and Ships Ahoy! (Ages 6-9) - FULL

A jam-packed week of art and imagination! Each morning explore a different ancient civilization through creative projects including Roman mosaics, Aztec paintings and Egyptian hieroglyphics with art educator Maria Sousa-Rovers. In the afternoon design and build a colourful mobile, paint your favourite Angry Birds or Minions character, create a unique Ship In A Bottle and more with Jim Smith of Progressive Music & Arts. Assisted by a summer student.

Dance: STEAM (Ages 6-9) 

Explore science, technology, art and math through imaginative dance activities, engaging games, and unique arts & craft projects. ‘Code’ movements and rhythm on a bracelet you will make. Create giant crystals while exploring the dynamics of dance. Design your own inventions from everyday materials. Discover how math and dance are related through fun numbers games. Celebrate the human body as an artistic and engineering marvel! Final presentation for family and friends - if necessary filmed to enjoy at home. Led by dancer and arts educator Kim Green, with a summer student assistant.

Musical Theatre: Willy Wonka, Matilda and James & The Giant Peach (Ages 8-12) - FULL

Do your children love to perform? Do they need an engaging, creative outlet? This camp is perfect! Children will discover the joys of musical theatre through exploring scenes and songs from these incredible Roald Dahl stories and make backdrops, props and costumes for a special performance (filmed if necessary). Includes breaks with games and time outdoors. Led by musical drama educator Tammy Whetham, with a summer student assistant.

Film Making: Live Action (Ages 8-12) - FULL

Action, adventure, comedy and suspense await you! Discover how to storyboard, develop a script, and then act in and shoot a short film. Includes learning about cinematography, editing, and adding special effects, music and titles. Children will use a MacBook, HD camera, tripod, green screen, boom microphone and aerial drone. Outdoor breaks. If possible, screening of films at the end of the week (also viewable on-line). Camp led by film-maker from ‘Film Camp in a Box’ with a summer student assistant.
